Pressure

Barometric pressure

Pressure is most useful when it shows movement. A stable, rising, or falling trend can add context to the rest of today’s fishing forecast.

Interpretation

Pressure trend is still building from recent samples. Current pressure is available, but there needs to be more readings before it can be interpreted.

Pressure is only one signal. Wind, tide, solunar timing, water movement, and local structure still matter.

Pressure movement

Recent readings build the pressure trend used for interpretation.

Pressure trend chart will appear once more readings are available.

Reading the wind

Wind direction and strength can affect comfort, casting, and exposure around this location.

Wind gusts can be stronger than the average wind speed, so it's worth checking the gust forecast if you're planning to fish from an exposed location or need to know about potential changes in conditions.

Even modest wind can affect comfort and casting, especially where the water is exposed.

The marker shows the current wind direction, while the daily outlook below shows whether conditions are likely to build or ease over the coming days.

Sweeneys Flats Fishing

Sweeneys Flats is a freshwater Yarra River location at Eltham, reached from Sweeneys Lane and set in bushland rather than a built-up fishing platform. Access is mainly land based, with an informal parking area on a dirt track and banks that can be easier than some nearby Yarra sections but still rough in places. Some adjoining land is private, so stay within public bushland and avoid crossing residences or farms. After rain, mud is a practical issue for both parking and walking, and some banks can become difficult or unsuitable for children.

The river here has a mix of faster rapids, deeper pools and nearby tributary influence, including creeks that meet the Yarra through this part of Melbourne’s north-east. That mix creates varied freshwater habitat, but the fishing can be inconsistent and the area receives pressure from local anglers. European carp are a major pest and must not be returned alive to the water. Macquarie perch occur in this stretch and are fully protected, so they must be released unharmed. Murray cod may appear in the broader Yarra here, but closed season rules apply from September through November inclusive. Fish taken from this area are best treated cautiously, with catch and release a sensible approach for most species other than carp.

Work the accessible bank edges, deeper pools, slower water beside faster flow, and any snaggy sections carefully rather than settling in one place. A running sinker rig can help keep bait moving naturally while giving some chance of steering fish away from snags. Redfin may respond to blade-style spinners, while eels and carp are more likely around slower, deeper or muddier sections and creek-influenced water. Bait fishing needs attention because long-necked turtles may be hooked; handle them carefully and return them safely. Westerfolds Park upstream has been signed as no fishing, so check local signage before extending a session beyond Sweeneys Flats.

Light freshwater gear suits the location. A regular spinning rod around 6 ft is practical, with 9 ft about the upper useful limit on the bank. Line around 6 lb is enough for most fishing here, with up to 10 lb reasonable where snags, carp or awkward bank angles are a concern. Between October and March, take extra care around grass, scrub and riverbanks because tiger and brown snakes can be active near the water.

Can Getfished tell if fish are biting at Sweeneys Flats, today?

No. Because a forecast cannot truthfully guarantee whether fish are biting at a specific spot right now. Getfished shows the current fishing conditions instead: tide movement, solunar timing, weather, wind, pressure, marine conditions and fising report, derived, species history.

Use this information to make informed decisions about where to fish, and to compare conditions across nearby locations. We hope you enjoy using Getfished to find your next great fishing spot!

🛈 Getfished Reporting Summaries Source

Fishing report summaries are derived from Getfished’s structured fishing report database system. More information on this on how we collect and structure fishing report data can be found on our Fishing reports information.

Forecasts are based on the Getfished Meteorological and Solunar Forecasting System, which combines data from the BOM, and other sources. Our custom software systems use these inputs to establish solunar, tides and other forecasts for fishing conditions.
