Yarra River - From Moutains to the Mouth
To date 15 fishing reports have been recorded in the Getfished database for the Yarra River.
The rivers length is 242 km from the source through to the estuary and into the Port Phillip Bay .
The most frequently caughts species recorded are:
Black Bream, Mullet, Mulloway.
The Yarra River begins in the mountains northeast of Melbourne. It starts as a shallow stream and changes a lot along its length. Some parts have deeper water with rocks that create rapids. Most of the river isn’t suitable for boats, except for a few spots, and even then, a kayak is usually the only option.
Because the river changes so much, the types of fish you find also change. Redfin aren’t common, but you can find them in some upper sections. I’ve caught them as far north as Warburton.
Murray Cod, introduced over a century ago, are caught from time to time between Yarra Glenn and Eltham. The water is too cold for the cod to truly flourish, but a breeding population exists.
While many native, non-recreational angling target species exist in the river, there is also a huge population of introduced pest species. Including Weather Loaches (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), Goldfish (Carassius auratus), Tench (Tinca tinca) and the damaging European Carp (Cyprinus carpio). The latter occurs in massive numbers, doing untold damage to the environment.
I, personally, would love to see more people targeting carp. They really are bad news for our waterways. They eat a range of foods, including fish fry and eggs. As well as stirring up the bottom mud, damaging the water conditions for native species.
Finally, Trout, specifically Brown Trout, are stocked in the river by the Victorian Fisheries Department.
Trout can be targeted in the upper reaches around Warburton using a fly or lures. The spinner lures and Tassie Devils are some of my favourite trout lures.
The occasional Rainbow Trout is landed. They are escapees from a dam, reservoir or lake.
