The river flows through a range of landscapes from the snow-fed mountains source, the large Lake Eildon complex, Lake Nagambie, Waranga Basin .

Along its course, Rainbow Trout are stocked in the lakes, with Lake Eildon being most well known for this. Brown Trout are stocked in the river itself. While native species like Yellowbelly and Murray Cod can be found within Lake Eildon and downriver all the way to the Murray.
