Pressure

Barometric pressure

Pressure is most useful when it shows movement. A stable, rising, or falling trend can add context to the rest of today’s fishing forecast.

Interpretation

Pressure trend is still building from recent samples. Current pressure is available, but there needs to be more readings before it can be interpreted.

Pressure is only one signal. Wind, tide, solunar timing, water movement, and local structure still matter.

Pressure movement

Recent readings build the pressure trend used for interpretation.

Pressure trend chart will appear once more readings are available.

Reading the wind

Wind direction and strength can affect comfort, casting, and exposure around this location.

Wind gusts can be stronger than the average wind speed, so it's worth checking the gust forecast if you're planning to fish from an exposed location or need to know about potential changes in conditions.

Even modest wind can affect comfort and casting, especially where the water is exposed.

The marker shows the current wind direction, while the daily outlook below shows whether conditions are likely to build or ease over the coming days.

Marine interpretation

Wave: low Water: cold

Wave readings indicate conditions that should remain manageable for many anglers.

Marine caution

Even lower wave conditions can vary depending on wind and local water movement. Forecast wave heights are averages rather than peak conditions. Individual waves may exceed the forecast height at times. Wind and local chop can quickly affect comfort and control. Wave period around 9.45 s can influence how conditions feel on the water. Conditions in open water can change quickly, so keep checking throughout the session.

Water temperature

Water temperature is around 13.4 C, making immersion a more significant factor to plan for. Cool or cold water can affect grip, coordination, and swimming ability. Wind and rough water can increase the impact of an accidental immersion.

Check local marine warnings, ramps, vessel limits and current conditions before heading out.

Mordialloc Pier Fishing

Traditionaly Mordi pier offers a variety of fishing opportunities due to this length. Mordialloc Pier is a beautiful long pier extending 174 metres (570.86 feet). Located in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Mordialloc.

It provides excellent land-based fishing in Port Phillip Bay

However, fishing at Mordialloc Pier can be tough at times, probably more so than in the past.

It’s not clear if this is due to pollution from the creek, fishing pressure, or the most likely reason – the massive dredging undertaken in the bay in recent years.

The pier runs from the mouth of the creek and has beaches on either side. Mordialloc Beach fishing isn’t as popular as fishing the pier or even as fishing Mordialloc Creek.

You’re going to have to put some effort in here. The fish are there but berley is going to produce better results than trying to get by without. Bread, tuna oil, chicken pellets. The usual forumations you make yourself of buy at your favourite tackle store.

The creek channel runs down left hand side of the pier. Both the creek and the pier are good for targetting bream and pinkies. The right hand side, just after the drop off produces some great squid. While gars can be caught both sides before you reach the bus shelter. After that the water is deeper and flathead, pinkie snapper, Australian salmon and other species can be caught.

While fishing in close to the pier with shorter rods can be worthwhile for bream, especially using soft plastics, a longer rod is going to be helpful for garfish. After the bus shelter, half way down the pier, a 9 to 12 foot rod is recommended. This will get you out further and allow you to target the reef if fishing at the end of the pier.

For species variety the pier allows you to target: squid, garfish, pinkie snapper, salmon and flathead. Fishing often improves around tide movement, low light periods and calmer conditions.

You can use the forecast, tide times, wind, pressure, bite windows and recent report context on this page to plan a fishing session.

I’ve marked in the species and the zones on the pier that will help you to make sure you are more likely to be in the right place for the right fish.

Pros

  • Close and easy access via Nepean Highway
  • Family-friendly – children under strict supervision
  • Good range of fish habitats and fish species
  • In the right conditions, you can target big Snapper In clear, calm conditions Squid fishing can be productive.
  • Shelter provided 2/3rds down the pier for wet weather protection.

Cons

  • Parking is good, but can work out expensive during the day.
  • Toilets unpredictable. Sometimes fair – sometimes rancid.
  • Can be a gathering point for youth gangs and evidence of drug use at times in toilets and scrub areas along the foreshore.
  • Creek is polluted, so avoid eating fish taken from the creek – catches from the pier are fine.

Can Getfished tell if fish are biting at Mordialloc Pier, today?

No. Because a forecast cannot truthfully guarantee whether fish are biting at a specific spot right now. Getfished shows the current fishing conditions instead: tide movement, solunar timing, weather, wind, pressure, marine conditions and fising report, derived, species history.

Use this information to make informed decisions about where to fish, and to compare conditions across nearby locations. We hope you enjoy using Getfished to find your next great fishing spot!

Fishing report summaries are derived from Getfished’s structured fishing report database system. More information on this on how we collect and structure fishing report data can be found on our Fishing reports information.

Forecasts are based on the Getfished Meteorological and Solunar Forecasting System, which combines data from the BOM, and other sources. Our custom software systems use these inputs to establish solunar, tides and other forecasts for fishing conditions.
