Pressure

Barometric pressure

Pressure is most useful when it shows movement. A stable, rising, or falling trend can add context to the rest of today’s fishing forecast.

Interpretation

Pressure trend is still building from recent samples. Current pressure is available, but there needs to be more readings before it can be interpreted.

Pressure is only one signal. Wind, tide, solunar timing, water movement, and local structure still matter.

Pressure movement

Recent readings build the pressure trend used for interpretation.

Pressure trend chart will appear once more readings are available.

Reading the wind

Wind direction and strength can affect comfort, casting, and exposure around this location.

Wind gusts can be stronger than the average wind speed, so it's worth checking the gust forecast if you're planning to fish from an exposed location or need to know about potential changes in conditions.

Even modest wind can affect comfort and casting, especially where the water is exposed.

The marker shows the current wind direction, while the daily outlook below shows whether conditions are likely to build or ease over the coming days.

Marine interpretation

Wave: low Water: cold

Marine conditions appear manageable based on currently available wave readings.

Marine caution

Even lower wave conditions can vary depending on wind and local water movement. Forecast wave heights are averages rather than peak conditions. Individual waves may exceed the forecast height at times. Wind and local chop can quickly affect comfort and control. Wave period around 8.60 s can influence how conditions feel on the water. Conditions in open water can change quickly, so keep checking throughout the session.

Water temperature

Water temperature is around 13.5 C, making immersion a more significant factor to plan for. Cool or cold water can affect grip, coordination, and swimming ability. Wind and rough water can increase the impact of an accidental immersion.

Check local marine warnings, ramps, vessel limits and current conditions before heading out.

Lagoon Pier Fishing

This pier is considered open year-round. Because it’s so close to the city and the suburb of Port Melbourne it can get busy at times.

I’ve tended to catch smaller flathead and pinkies here. Most of what I returned to the water was of legal size. Some fishos report catching bream, mullet, salmon and trevally.

Fishing Lagoon Pier Tips

I’ve found the fish tend to start biting here on the tide change.

Like many pier fishing locations on Port Phillip Bay, strong wind conditions tend to see an increase in snapper catches.

There are a lot of submerged rocks, so you need to cast out a bit further to avoid snagging your line on them. For this reason, I tend to use a paternoster rig at Lagoon pier – along with a break-off sinker that I fasten with a cut-down hair clip.

Lagoon Pier Fishing Tackle

When fishing Lagoon Pier, I tend to use lighter tackle, no more than a 10lb main line, up to 15 to 20lb leader.

A whiting-style paternoster rig makes a good all-round rig on these kinds of piers.

However, go heavier in rougher conditions when targeting big snapper and flathead.

A spinning rod around 7 to 9 feet long is ideal. Some fishers recommend a running sinker. I personally prefer a paternoster rig here.

Lagoon Pier Bait & Lures

Soft plastics work well as lures.

You can try a variety of retrieval techniques, as well as “bait and wait” fishing with sandworm or prawn soft-plastics set up on a standard paternoster rig.

As with all fishing, berley is your friend at Lagoon Pier. Breadcrumbs, tuna oil, chicken, garlic, and aniseed all make good ingredients for your berley.

Good baits include pilchards, whitebait, prawns, sandworm, pippies and chicken.

Snapper and pinkies are more likely when the tide is rising or is high. Low tide and when the tide is running out seem to be when flathead are on.

Note – the restriction on two fishing lines is only here.

My choice here is a paternoster rig. For smaller fish like flathead, bream and pinkies, this is ideal. A paternoster rig works with a variety of baits, including pilchards, whitebait, bluebait, squid tentacles or chicken. A Whiting Rig is ideal for this.

For larger snapper, a snapper rig is a good choice, baited up with pilchards and/or squid tentacles.

Lagoon Pier Fishing Review Summary

Lagoon Pier is a great spot for some land-based fishing close to Melbourne.

A good selection of fish species is regularly caught here. During a big blow, some larger snapper models come in within range.

At other times, there are plenty of pinkies, flathead and bream to satisfy.

Pros

  • Close and easy access from around Melbourne
  • Family-friendly – children under strict supervision
  • Good range of fish habitats and fish species
  • In the right conditions, you can target big Snapper

Cons

  • Parking good, but can work out expensive during the day.
  • Difficult to get on hot summer days.
  • Toilets unpredictable. Usually OK, but sometimes rancid.
  • Surrounding roads get pretty busy during peak hours.

Can Getfished tell if fish are biting at Lagoon Pier, today?

No. Because a forecast cannot truthfully guarantee whether fish are biting at a specific spot right now. Getfished shows the current fishing conditions instead: tide movement, solunar timing, weather, wind, pressure, marine conditions and fising report, derived, species history.
