Western Port Massive Tidal Variation

Lat: -38.4348,Long: 145.2399

Western Port has several piers where you can catch many different types of fish.

While light tackle can be used on piers, some species and currents may require heavier gear.

The biggest difference in Western Port, compared to Port Phillip Bay, is the tides. Because Port Phillip Bay has a narrow entrance, it is much larger and has relatively shallow tides. Western Port, on the other hand, has a wide entrance and significant depth in parts. It is much smaller, and so the tidal variation can be huge. It’s easy to get stuck on an exposed mud bank in a boat or kayak. Some piers are very shallow at low tide.

Western Port Bay Piers are all too often in a sad state of repair due to state government neglect. For too long, Fishing License fees have been diverted to other boutique policies and pork-barreling.

In some areas, locals have had to campaign to save piers, with some locations raising funds to refurbish and even rebuild themselves.

This shouldn’t be necessary. Victoria charges for fishing licence fees, boat registration, and boat trailer registration.

Kudos to the communities that have fought these battles.
