Silver Trevally Fishing Guide

Silver trevally are schooling saltwater fish found around Australian bays, estuaries, reefs, rock walls, piers and inshore structure, including Victorian waters. The source treats them as active, hard-fighting fish suited to light tackle where bait, berley, current and structure combine. They are often available to land-based anglers as well as boat anglers, particularly around clean water, pylons, channels and reef or rubble edges.

They feed on small fish, crustaceans and other small marine food, so they respond to moving water and concentrated bait. Schools may pass quickly, making berley and repeated accurate casts useful. Tide changes, current lines and deeper edges around structure can matter more than a long list of locations. In Victoria and other states, silver trevally may share water with bream, snapper, garfish and other inshore species, so identify retained fish correctly.

Tactics should use small, natural presentations. Lightly weighted baits, small soft plastics, metal lures and baitfish-style offerings are suitable. Around piers and rock walls, let bait or lures sink through the trail rather than dragging them unnaturally. If fish are visible but tentative, reduce hook and bait size, lighten weight and keep the berley fine enough to hold the school without feeding it.

When a school arrives, keep casts short and organised so the bait stays in the berley stream. Trevally can move quickly, so missed bites should be followed up immediately.

Gear can be light but needs enough leader to handle pylons, rocks and mixed bycatch. Small hooks, modest sinkers and sensitive rods help detect quick bites. Increase leader strength where fish are hooked close to abrasive structure or deeper walls. Silver trevally rules vary, and some states use combined limits or different minimum sizes. Check local Victorian or state regulations before retaining fish.

If berley attracts only small fish, let a slightly heavier bait sink below them; better trevally may sit deeper under the surface activity.

Check your local state fishing authority website for current silver trevally size, bag and rule changes.
