Mulloway Fishing Reports

Argyrosomus japonicus

Mulloway fishing activity is based upon real fishing reports collected over a decade, by Getfished. It represents an overview of all reports. With 56 reports across 23 reported locations, the dataset helps show longer-term fishing patterns rather than isolated catches.

Mulloway Seasonal pattern Report activity is strongest through winter, with autumn also contributing a notable share of reports. Activity is lower through spring.

Mulloway Bait and lure signal Reported bait patterns commonly include Squid, Pilchard and Fresh baits. Lure reports are led by Soft plastics, Zman grubz and 4 paddle tail soft plastics.

Mulloway Fishing Guide

Mulloway are large estuary, beach and inshore predators found in Australian saltwater and tidal systems, including Victorian and NSW-style surf, river mouth and estuary water. They are a cautious, powerful species that rewards timing, patience and bait placement more than constant lure changes. They feed on fish, squid and other larger prey, often using deeper water, current and low light.

Fishing context is tied to tide, moon, bait movement and structure. River mouths, deep holes, bridge pylons, breakwalls, surf gutters, channels and edges near bait schools can all matter. Low light, night periods and tide changes are useful because mulloway move through ambush lanes. They can be caught from shore or boat, but the important point is to fish where food and deeper holding water meet.

Tactics should match the water. From beaches, place baits in gutters or holes rather than empty surf. In estuaries, focus on current lines, bridge shadow, rock walls, channel edges and deeper bends. Live baits, squid, fish fillets and large soft plastics or lures are useful where supported, but the presentation must look natural and stay in the zone. Move only after giving a high-confidence spot enough time through the tide.

Fresh bait, quiet approach and timing are more important than constant recasting. If bait is being pushed out of the strike zone, change sinker weight or angle rather than leaving the gutter or hole too early.

Gear needs enough power for heavy fish, current, rocks and pier or wall height. Strong leader is justified around abrasion, pylons and surf. Hooks, sinkers and line should be matched to bait size and water movement rather than made heavy by default. Mulloway are subject to strict size and bag rules in many states, and mismeasuring fish is a real risk with large minimum sizes.

Carry a measure long enough for legal fish before the session starts, because estimating size on a beach, wall or boat deck is not reliable.

Check your local state fishing authority website for current mulloway size, bag and rule changes.
